If you have decided to join a health club and you have a good choice available in your local area then, you need to consider a few things before you make your final choice. As well as keeping fit you should also feel comfortable and enjoy going to the health club to do your workout. Therefore, it pays to go around and check out each club and get a feel for the place. What you may find is that certain gyms may target specific age groups are people who specialise in a specific training such as weight training.
As well as getting a feel for the place you should look out for the quality and the variety of exercise equipment being used, how friendly and helpful the staff are and if the facilities are clean and well maintained.
Use the following as guidelines to help you make the right choice:
Opening and closing times
If you work unusual hours such as shift work then, it is best to join a club that is either opened 24 hours per day or at the very least has an early opening time in the mornings and extended closing times in the evening.
Membership policy
Make sure you understand the clubs policy on cancellations and refunds. Check if there is a cooling off period where you can sign up and cancel after a short period of time with a refund if you decide the club is not for you.
Trained personnel
Speak to the club manager to ensure the staff are fully trained and are qualified with recognised national bodies such as the American Council on Exercise.
Health & safety
How clean or unclean the clubs facilities are reflects on the quality of service they provide. Therefore, check out the changing rooms, showers and saunas to determine how clean they are. If there dirty marks, dust, dried up sweat then, this is a warning sign. Health Clubs that are not well maintained are cleaned on a regular basis are certainly not healthy.
Fees
With health clubs the rule you get what you pay for usually applies however, this is not always the case and that is why it pays to check it out first. If a club has a high price tag and that does not reflect on the quality of equipment and service being offered then, this is a good sign to look elsewhere.
Quality equipment
A quality club will renew and maintain their exercise equipment on a regular basis and will undertake regular quality checks to maintain high standards. When you go and visit try out a few of the treadmills and weight machines and determine if they are in good order. If the exercise equipment is noisy are worn out then this is definitely not a good sign.
