-Take a deep breath.
Remember, your child is going to take their cues from you. If you freak out or act as though the world is coming to an end, so will they. Be sure to schedule time for yourself to deal with the news either alone or with your partner. Decide how you will approach diabetes as a family unit rather than take sole responsibility.
-Remember to deal with the regular child stuff as well as the diabetes.
Just because diabetes has been thrown in to the mix, doesnt mean that all the usual childhood issues and problems have suddenly disappeared. Make sure that you give the other components of your childs life attention and dont just focus on the diabetes symptoms.
-Be their advocate.
The medical community will become your lifeline and your partner as you all work to create a management plan for your child. Remember, that you are your childs representative and that they will rely on you to seek out the best level of care available. Signing your child up for every clinical trial may not be in their best interest and you may need to advocate for their proper care while they attend school. Dont wait for problems to arise before you learn about diabetic skin care. Be proactive and keep up to date on whats happening in the diabetic community.
-Join a diabetes support group.
Simply being able to meet other children like themselves and see how other families successfully navigate the diabetic challenge can go a long way towards alleviating both of your fears and anxieties. Some groups can pair newly diagnosed individuals and families with a mentor to ease their learning curve and provide some of the non medical answers that you need to know.
-Make it easy by stocking appropriate foods.
It is one thing to be told that you cant reach into the snack cupboard without approval, but it is even more devastating to see the rest of the family carrying on as usual. Having healthy food choices on the diabetic diet and posting their values and the proper boluses of insulin needed to digest them properly will help. What will help even more is cracking down on other family members that are thoughtlessly scavenging snacks rather than making healthy eating choices.
-Involve the family in the research and learning.
Getting the whole family on the healthy eating band wagon and having them learn how to identify problematic symptoms and their treatment will increase your childs chances of successfully management. This approach will ensure that no one person holds all of the responsibility and knowledge and will also prevent the non-diabetic children from feeling left out or ignored.
-Dont focus on the potential dangers but dont gloss over them.
Children need to know why they need to pay close attention to the signals their body is giving, but they dont need that done with a heavy handed scare tactic. Too much emphasis on long term diabetes complications and dangers will impede their ability to rationally deal with diabetes and not become hyper vigilant to the exclusion of everything else.

If you live in Florida and have chronic or acute pain but no health insurance, visit a Florida pain clinic for care.
Most Florida pain management doctors will treat people who don’t have insurance. You may go to the clinic without first receiving a referral from your general practitioner or family physician.
For example, if you’ve been in a car accident, you still may have some pain from your injuries. The physicians at a Florida pain clinic can give you enough pain medications right then that will last you for a few days, as well as prescription so that you may purchase a supply at your local pharmacy that will last as long as the doctor thinks you need.
Florida pain clinics bring doctors and other health care professions from various specialties who put their expertise together to create a comprehensive, individual plan to treat your pain. Some Florida pain management doctors will prescribe medications as well as possibly acupuncture and hypnosis.
Some pain clinics are more like pain management centers where health care professionals such as anesthesiologists, neurologists, physical therapists, rehabilitation physicians, psychologists and others work together to create a pain management plan for each patient. It’s wise, by the way, to search for a pain physician who is certified by the American Board of Pain Medicine.
Too many people suffer from acute or chronic pain needlessly because they believe they won’t be treated without health insurance. (The American Medical Association reports that chronic pain often is undertreated) Your pain can have vast negative effects on your outlook and the quality of your life as well as the lives of those you love. Instead of suffering, why not get treatment for your pain by visiting a Florida pain clinic?

Part 4 of my “Let’s Play – Bioshock” series. Things are slowly getting there. The trouble is with this level is that you are in the same area the entire time, you don’t really FEEL like you’re getting anywhere. Still, progress IS being made and hopefully we will be out of the Medical Pavilion VERY soon!
shop.lesstroud.ca After his marriage to Sue Jamison in 1994, the two of them spent one year living in the Canadian wilderness living a paleolithic existence. They traveled to Goldsborough Lake ( [show location on an interactive map] 50°41′55″N 89°20′46″W / 50.69861°N 89.34611°W / 50.69861; -89.34611) deep in the Wabakimi and built a cabin with no metal, plastic, or otherwise manufactured tools. They took a store of traditional foods and attempted to supplement it by hunting and trapping. Family and medical emergencies brought them out of the bush on two occasions. Their primitive living experience was filmed by Stroud and released as the 50 minute documentary, Snowshoes and Solitude, which was named Best Documentary at the Muskoka Film Festival and Best Film at the Waterwalker Film Festival.
